Lesson 6: Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC)

2 comments:

  1. Well, making my first marc record was an exercise in frustration. Perhaps I am not mathematically inclined, but the detail level is just too much for me!!

At least I was able to look at the "real" record and see where I was correct and where I was missing items, but the missing items/different items had no rational explanation that I could find.

Here are my questions from my post

Since I had What the Dog Saw right here, I decided to try at catalogue it.
My attempt was moderately successful, but it raised more questions than it solved:

    a. 0-90 make no sense whatsoever and I cannot see where in the book they got this data.
    b. 100 no where does it say his bday, so are you supposed to look that up elsewhere?
    c. 245 why do they skip $b?
    d. 260 why is there a comma after company but a colon after New York?
    e. 300 nowhere on the book does it have a measurement, so are you supposed to pull out a ruler?
f 449. what is the difference between NWT nonfic and GM nonfic?
    g 590 0911... what does 0911 refer to?
    h. has someone read the book to come up with these subjects b/c they are not in any of the front or back matter about the book.

  2. I just checked out the vancouver public library (the above example was from vancouver islandr regional library). The 500s are used by VPL to include the front and back matter from the book, and then it displays in the search record. Interestingly VPL does not include the call #'s of all the other copies of the book in the 900s as does the VIRL

I wonder if they get marc from different locations, or if someone took the time to enter the details of the book.

One has to question why details about the book would be optional?
